The Most Meaningful Mother’s Day Gift I’ve Ever Painted
A beautiful bride & groom, a beach portrait, and the beautiful collaboration that brought her whole family together.
Every once in a while, a commission comes along that reminds me exactly why I love this work & why I know I am exactly where God wants me to be with my job.
A bride reached out wanting to give her mother something truly special for Mother’s Day — a thoughtfully commissioned painting. A family portrait on the beach from her wedding day, with a heartfelt addition: her father and her brother, who had passed, painted in alongside her, her husband, and her mom. The whole family, together, in one beautiful moment.
It was the kind of gift that only a painting can give. And the process of creating it together was just as meaningful as the finished piece.
This is one of my favorite things about custom portraiture — the collaboration. It’s not usually just “send me a photo and I’ll paint it.” It’s a real back-and-forth. She sent me some photos from their beautiful beach wedding day, along with separate photos of her father and brother.
We talked through her vision — where they’d stand, how the grouping would feel, which image of her loved ones showed their personalities best. Little by little, the composition started to take shape.
Before I ever pick up a brush, I’ll typically put together a Photoshop mockup or a sketch so the client can actually see what we’re building. It’s such an important step. You can move people around, try different arrangements, and make sure everything feels right before we commit. We went back and forth making sure they were the right height and that everything was exactly how she had envisioned it.
One other detail we added to the plan with the sky. The bride sent me another image from their wedding where she loved the sunset and asked if I could use that as a reference for their sky in their family portrait. Who doesn’t LOVE a good sunset? This really made the painting and gave it this magical, heaven like quality. We also added a beautiful gold frame – a classic touch that makes it feel like a true heirloom, ready to live through generations.
That’s the magic of a painting.
A photograph is a record of a moment. A painting is an interpretation — and that means we get to make choices. We can find the light that feels most right, arrange the people who matter most, and create something that captures not just what happened, but how it felt or how we wish it felt.
I love imagining this mother opening her gift on Mother’s Day morning. Seeing her whole family in a single frame — her daughter on her wedding day, her new son-in-law, and the people she loves and misses, right there beside them. Painted in warm sunset light, on the beach, together.
That’s a gift that will live on the wall for generations. And I feel so incredibly lucky to get to make pieces like this.
